BEST PRACTICE –
01: PROMOTION OF READING HABIT

2. Objectives of the Practice
The very objective of the introduction of this particular promotional activities is –
To infuse reading habit among students. To create competitive spirit.
To enhance skills and overall personality.
To increase the footfall of students to central library.
To ensure optimum utility of available learning resources at central library.
To reduce the dependency on mobile technology.

3. The Context
College has an independent spacious central library. The features of the central library include a separate reading facility for girl students, OPAC, INFLIBNET n-list, digital library, academic journals, encyclopaedias, learning resources on communication skills, personality development, competitive examinations, etc. Having increased the sufficient learning resources at the central library from time to time, the optimal utility of the learning resources from the central library found to be negligible from the overall bunch of students. In association with IQAC, Librarian identified that, most of the students are deviated from conventional mode of learning and inclined towards mobile technology but however, only few students found to be using mobile for their academic performance and competitive examinations. However, after the pendamic circumstances, majority of the students solely dependent on mobile technology. Conventional mode of reading in no way substitute with advancement of technology, keeping this in view, development of reading habit along with effective use of mobile technology would shape the career span of every individual. Hence, to attract almost all the students towards central library, introduced a scheme, “READ A BOOK – GET A PRIZE”.

4. The Practice
During the orientation programme, Librarian highlights the overall features of the central library. Students are well informed about the effective use of mobile technology only for the purpose of academic excellence and personality development. In addition to this, encourage students to utilise the available learning resources at the central library, for this purpose, every faculty members do give some assignments beyond the prescribed syllabus and instruct them to get the relevant study materials at the central library and prepare the assignment. Respective faculty also guided students as to how to collect primary and secondary data, prepare the notes, etc. Further, to motivate students at large, Librarian do conduct Dr.S.R. Ranganathan day, Book Exhibition, quiz competitions, Book Talk, interactive sessions, etc.
To keep active participation of every students enrolled, Librarian conducts a class wise competition entitled, “Read a Book – Get a Prize. The objective of this competition is elaborated to students in every class and instruct every students to get a book on moral values, greatest personality, motivational books, etc. This has made mandatory to all the students. At a stretch only 30 students are given such book for a period of 06 days and get the overall impact of reading such book should be submitted in written to the Librarian on 07th working day compulsorily. Collected assignment is further analysed by the faculty members and almost all the participants encouraged to get a pen and higher scorer would get a moral based book as First, Second and Third Prize class on the death anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan.

5. Evidence of Success
College has ensured in augmentation of learning resources from time to time. With the active leadership of our Principal, financial provisions are provided to procure learning resources based on the feedback from stakeholders on priority basis. The entire staff of the college strived their best to promote and encourage almost all the students to utilise the available learning resources, remote access, e-learning resources, academic journals, learning resources on competitive examinations, personality development, etc., which are available at the central library. The overall impact of this practice has motivated good number of students to step into library every now and then even after their graduation. The average footfall of the students has increased from 20% to beyond 70%. Increased the circulation. It is proud to state here that, some of the students who have started utilising the learning resources motivated them to become renowned poets, novelist, publications, etc. Majority of such students are ever grateful to the Institution for motivating and encouraging them who were ignorant of career prospects during their tenure of study. With the basement of this inculcating the culture of reading habit among students, some of the students could able to qualify in competitive examinations, some students continued for higher education in Journalism & Mass Communications, one student has got prestigious award Ramanath Goyanka – national award, one of the alumnus of the college has published more than 23 books on career aspects.
All this clearly highlights that good number of students started utilising the available learning resources at the central library.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required Though initially it was a challenging task but however, every teaching staff of the college joined their hands in implementing the scheme and ensured to motivate almost all the students to utilise the available learning resources at the central library. College has provided necessary financial provisions for the procurement of learning resources on moral values, professional values, biography of greatest personality, Communication Skills, etc.

To develop network with neighbourhood community.
To render the social services.
To develop the art of social responsibilities.
To foster an environment for involving in social activities.

3.The Context
Ever since the inception of the college, majority of the students enrolled are hailing from rural villages belonging to economically weaker, agricultural background, labourers, etc. The Institutional Vision and Mission statement reflect in catering to students by facilitating necessary provisions in providing necessary infrastructural facilities, sufficient learning resources based on priority. In addition to the curricular activities, to keep students active in physically, mentally, psychologically and emotionally fit and strong, they are encouraged to involve in extension activities through the units i.e., NSS, Rovers & Rangers, Red Cross, Women Empowerment Cell, etc.
